Many students believe this to be true, but can't find anything worth pursuing. They've seen the hopelessness in money, status, drugs, and failed marriages. They end up with giant potential and no targets worth aiming at.

Our hope and prayer for this generation of Christian students is that they'll discover the only path worth following, the only goal worth their potential: becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ and serving Him.

We want the Zelos Journal for Student Disciples to be a tool in accomplishing two goals. Jesus called us not only to be His disciples, but to make disciples. So first, we hope that students will be able to use Zelos on their own to dig deeper into God's Word and apply it to their right-now lives. We also want to give youth workers and teachers a tool to use with students as they disciple teenagers into committed Jesus-followers.

With that in mind, we've included the following sections in each quarterly issue of the Zelos Journal:

The "Z-Studies"—these weekly Bible studies include three days' worth of studies, with suggested options to take students deeper on their own. Teenagers are constantly told that they can do anything they want with their lives, that they can reach any goal if they're willing to work hard.

Each day's study includes a suggested reading from Scripture, a brief commentary on that Scripture, a journaling question with room for the student to write a quick personal reflection on the Scripture, and a directed prayer in response to the Scripture. Each new month brings a new unit of "Z-Studies" taken either from a specific book of the Bible or a topic of interest to teenagers. Recent units have included "The Book of Acts," "Faith," "Proverbs," "Witnessing," "Hebrews," and "Our Identity in Christ."

The units and Scriptures studied correlate directly to the Scripture Press "Zelos High School Bible Study Curriculum." But these studies easily stand alone, if you're not using the curriculum. In fact, the Zelos Journal is an excellent discipling tool for a student to use on his or her own, in a one-on-one discipling relationship, or as part of a larger class.

The Theme Section—each quarterly issue of the Zelos Journal includes a theme section of four to five magazine-style articles to guide students' thinking on one of the units in the "Z-Studies." These full-color, graphically contemporary and appealing stories include exciting fiction; true stories of individuals living out their call to follow Jesus; practical teaching articles on how to apply specific biblical principles; as well as helpful humor stories and poetry. The "Time Zone" Student Planning Calendar—the back third of every issue of the Zelos Journal includes a daily planning calendar to help busy students plan their lives by recording homework assignments, work and practice schedules, upcoming youth group events, ministry outings, etc. The idea is to help students develop time-management skills and to help them see following Jesus as part of their everyday lives--not a separate "church thing."
